The best exfoliators will remove dead skin cells and maximise every step of your skincare routine. Here are GQ’s absolute faves…
All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.
First things first: the best exfoliator for men is not the one with the biggest scrubbing granules. Contrary to popular opinion, larger pieces of salt or shell do not do a better job of sloughing off dead skin cells: instead, they can create small tears in the skin, leading to exactly the opposite effect you're going for. What you want from your exfoliant is instead the gentle but effective removal of dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin.
Used correctly — in chemical form or with physical scrubbing elements — an exfoliant can transform the rest of your routine. The goal here is to create a perfect base for the best men's moisturisers and best men's face serums to lay on top of. Used sparingly (more on that later), the best facial exfoliants should leave your skin looking and feeling fresher, reducing the likelihood of breakouts, combatting dryness and even removing unseen dirt.
A step beyond the contents of your best wash bag and your simple best face wash for men and SPF moisturiser, exfoliant could be your next step to a holistic skincare routine. Below, you'll find a list of our absolute favourites, but before we jump in, take a look at our top picks…and some more advice.

How often should you use an exfoliator?
Face wash, toner, moisturiser, SPF…these are all products that should be used daily. Exfoliators, though, are more like face masks: a sparing treat for the skin. Three times a week should be your limit, and those with sensitive skin should keep it to once or twice. Using this additional tool will give your skin a more thorough cleanse than a simple face wash, but use too often and you may do more damage than good. If you want to avoid premature ageing, irritation and blemishes, keep your exfoliating to a minimum.
How do you exfoliate?
Aside from your product, you'll need warm water and a gentle touch: you're not scrubbing the foil off a scratch card here. Prep your skin with hot water and then gently apply the product in a circular motion before rinsing off excess product. Voila: a perfect canvas for a close have or a slick of moisturiser.
How we test men's exfoliators
Grooming has been one of the central pillars of British GQ since its inception in 1988, and at American GQ even longer. But it isn't only received knowledge that we use to select which grooming products we recommend to our readers. Today, grooming expert of decades and former grooming editor at various publications Adrian Clark personally tries and tests every exfoliator we feature below, using product launches, personal favourites and sample trial runs as his test schedule and his own bathroom as his test centre. He combines personal experience and the science of the ingredients in each product to come to his conclusions.
